AGM

Dear Members,
A warm welcome to all of you who signed up at the Freshers’ fair! We’re well on our way to make this a very exciting year for all of you.

The next step: Elect your committee. This will be done at our AGM, which will be between 5:00 and 6:00 pm this Thursday, 9th October in room D702 Even if you don’t intend to stand for any position, this is a great opportunity to come along and hear about what we have in store for you, meet your fellow Scandis and have your say on what you would like to see us doing this year. After the meeting we will be going to the George IV for an informal drink together.
The SU requires the following positions to be filled, and if you are interested in being heavily involved in the society, we strongly encourage you to apply to the following positions :

President – schedule meetings and generally co-ordinate the smooth running of all areas of activity. This position may or may not include a co-president or vice-president.
Secretary – take minutes of committee meetings, draft letters, delegate correspondence to the appropriate officers. This is the key administrative position in the society.
Treasurer – keep an eye on our cash-flow and attend SU budget meetings – an ideal opportunity for some finance and (light) number-crunching experience
If you want to be involved in the society without spending too much time and energy, the following positions are also crucial to the running of the society;
Events officer ( s ) – book clubs, talk good deals out of club owners for the benefit of our members. This is the meat and potatoes of our society’s activities – last year we hosted many successful social events and a very successful Christmas dinner.
Speakers officer ( s ) – schedule serious speakers, panel discussions, and anything else you would like to see done. Last year’s highlights included a Nordic entrepreneurs’ panel discussion and reception
Careers officer – you’ll be liaising with potential employers of Scandinavian-linked graduates to set up career forums and generally help show our members what’s out there for them once student life ceases. Last year we hosted our sponsors, Schibsted, for a careers day packed with activities and talks.
Sponsorship officer- maintaining relations with our current sponsor, Schibsted, working towards companies to sponsor specific events
IT-Officer - A new position to develop and maintain an internet platform for the Scandinavian Society
Postgrad officer – help involve our substantial membership base among postgraduate students in the activities of the society
Having said that, division of labour in the society is not too rigid, and we are happy to tailor officer positions to demand and request – we all help each other out and are generally a sociable bunch!

We look forward to seeing you at 5:00 pm this Thursday, 9th October in room D702

Best wishes,Your outgoing committee
