It's that time of the term again!

Our end of term blowout will combine a talk with a night out, bridged by a post-talk pre-party in the Senior Common Room!

Please feel free to attend all or part of the evening - either way we promise a good time!

The talk will be on the Danish model of flexicurity, mainly that it is relatively complex and among other things requires an active labour market policy as well as trust in both politicians and the social partners; whether the model can survive globalisation and a financial crisis; and if it is relevant for other countries.Format: The event will open with a brief introduction by the chair followed by a presentation of 15-20 mins. Thereafter there will be questions for the speaker and we will end the evening with some drinks and snacks in the SCR in the Old Building.Presenters: Mr Claus Hjort Frederiksen, Minister of Employment in the Danish Government . Part of the Danish delegation will also be: Mr. Bo Smith, Permanent Secretary ; Mr. Søren Møller Andersen, Head of Press and Personal Adviser ; Mr. René Andreasen, Personal Secretary to the Minister and Mr. Kim Taasby, Special AdviserChair: Dr Marco Simoni from the European Institute at the LSE with academic expertise in European Political Economy. Dr Simoni was also co-author of one of the first international publications on flexicurity: Decent work in Denmark. Employment, social efficiency and economic security

Thank you

Immigration into the Nordic countries: an overview presented by the Finnish, Danish and Swedish embassies

Dear SCANDISOC members,

Don't miss out on our first Speakers Event: an academically stimulating talk on the topic of migration into the Nordic countries. This will be followed by drinks and snacks in the Senior Common Room. Come and represent the society, ask lots of questions to the panel, mingle and enjoy the fine wine!

Event details:

Date: 23d February
Time: 18.30-20.00 (reception 20.00-21.00)
Venues: D502 (Clement House). Reception in the Senior Common Room (Old Building).
Topic: "Immigration into the Nordic countries: an overview presented by the Finnish, Danish and Swedish embassies."
Format: John Madeley will open the Panel with a brief introduction. This will be followed by a 10 - max 15 minute talk by each participant, preferably in power point format. Madeley will then sum up the different views, and initiate a debate between the participants and open for questions from the audience.

Week 11-13 News

Dear Members,

Here are a few upcoming events that might be of interest to you;

1. Informal drinks evening tonight in the Three Tuns from 1830 onwards with honorary guests from Aarhus Business School in Denmark. All you have to do is show up. We hope as many of you as possible will be able to make it to our first event of the year!
2. There will be a Nordic Ambassador's Panel discussion just like last year on 23rd February 18-20 in D502 followed by a reception in the Senior Common Room with beverages and snacks provided. This event was a success last year, and we expect it to be even better this year, so don’t miss out!
3. For those who are interested in innebandy (floorball), we are going to organize a match against the LSE Floorball Society to be held soon. If you are interested please reply to this email with your name and INNEBANDY in the subject line. We will keep then keep you posted on when this play-off is going to take place.
4. The Danish minister of Employment is coming on the 16th March to host a debate on the Danish model of flexicurity; how it is relatively complex and among other things requires an active labour market policy as well as trust in both politicians and the social partners; whether the model can survive globalisation and a financial crisis; and if it is relevant for other countries. The debate will be followed by a reception.

Informal Gathering Friday, Jan 15th!

In order to celebrate a new year and a visit from the C3 class (part of the Aarhus Business School in Denmark ) the Scandinavian Society will be having informal drinks at the Tuns on Friday, January 30th, 18:30 -ish!
